For centuries the Japanese noted that catfish leapt madly about in their ponds before an earthquake struck. In 1835, an immense flock of screaming seabirds flew over the city of Concepción, Chile. Hours later, the city was destroyed by an earthquake. Minutes before the devastating San Francisco quake of 1906, dogs ran howling through the streets. In 1963, shorty before an earthquake hit Skopje, Yugoslavia (now the capital of Macedonia), the zoo animals cried out and charge their cage bars.
In 1975, a man in Guatemala got up from his bed to prepare a snack shortly after midnight. To his surprise, he saw his two goldfish leap out of the bowl and land on the floor. The man was puzzled, but he placed the fish back in the bowl and returned to his bed. Three hours later an earthquake rocked Guatemala, less than 20 miles from where the man and his goldfish lived. Over 17,000 people were killed.
Were these animals somehow aware that an earthquake was coming? Many Asian people have long believe that animals can sense earthquakes about to strike. Western Scientist, however, usually dismissed reports of strange animal behavior as nothing more than tall tales (a story that may or may not to be true, but contain details that are hard to believe) Yet, in time, the scientist became impressed by the sheer volume of stories concerning animal behavior before earthquakes. So, in recent years, the experts have begun to take a second look. Now most scientist are convinced that there is really something to the idea that animals can sense when earthquakes are about to take place.
The event that change the views of many scientist took place in northeastern China during the early 1970s. Chinese scientist, using an instrument called seismograph , began to record and measured a series of large shocks in the earth. The seismic signal increased so sharply that in 1974 the Chinese expert flatly predicted that a major earthquake would strike the region within two years. Six month later, the animals in the region went crazy. Snakes turned suicidal by climbing out of their cozy underground homes and freezing in the winter cold. Rats ran through the streets in broad daylight. Birds in cages flew wildly about. Chicken refused to enter their coops. In general, the animal kingdom went berserk. Within hours, northeastern China was hit by a series of minor earth tremors.
In February 1974, geese began to fly into trees. Pigs attacked each other and tore down their own pens. Dogs howled wildly for no apparent reason . Three police dogs suddenly refused to obey the commands of their trainers and began sniffing the ground. These occurrences, too, were followed by a series of minor shocks.
Chinese officials were now certain that a major earthquake was coming soon. The order the evacuation of Haicheng - a city with over 1 million people. Within a few hours after the evacuation, a huge earthquake reduced the city to rubble. Countless lives saved because the Chinese listen to the warning being given by the animals.
